Why Amex MR

Why MR beats collecting Avios directly

Avios are excellent — but they're just one of 14+ things you can do with Membership Rewards points. When you collect Amex MR, you retain total flexibility. You can convert to Avios the moment you spot a great redemption, but until then you can also transfer to Virgin, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Air France KLM, Hilton Honors, and more. Avios collected directly through a BA card or Barclays cannot be converted back into MR — the door only swings one way.

You're never locked in

MR points can move to whichever partner offers the best redemption for your specific trip. Decide when you have a flight in mind — not before.

More partners = more sweet spots

Different airlines offer different sweet spots. Having 14+ options means you can optimise for your actual destination rather than just flying BA routes.

Points don't expire while active

Amex MR points remain live as long as you hold an active Amex card. No pressure to redeem before you've found the right opportunity.

How to earn

The cards that earn Membership Rewards

All Amex MR cards earn the same currency — the difference is earn rate, welcome bonus, annual fee, and travel perks.

Amex Platinum

Premium
Fee: £650/yearEarn rate: 1 MR per £1 everywhere

Welcome bonus

40,000 MR points

after £6,000 in 6 months

  • Priority Pass lounge access (unlimited)
  • Comprehensive worldwide travel insurance
  • £200 annual travel credit
  • Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy Gold status
  • Global Dining Credits and hotel collection benefits

Verdict

The fee is steep but every perk has a cash value. If you travel often enough to use the lounge access, travel insurance, and £200 credit, the card can pay for itself before you factor in a single point.

Best for

Frequent travellers who fly 6+ times a year and will actively use the perks.

Amex Preferred Rewards Gold

Best all-rounder
Fee: No fee in year 1, then £195/yearEarn rate: 1 MR per £1 everywhere, 2 MR per £1 at supermarkets and petrol stations

Welcome bonus

20,000 MR points

after £3,000 in 3 months

  • Double points at supermarkets (2 MR per £1)
  • Double points at petrol stations (2 MR per £1)
  • 2 complimentary airport lounge passes per year
  • Travel accident insurance included
  • No fee in year 1 — excellent for testing MR

Verdict

The 20,000-point welcome bonus is worth roughly £200–£300 in Avios on flights, and the double points at supermarkets and petrol stations make it a genuinely competitive everyday card. Year 2 the £195 fee needs justifying — reassess at that point.

Best for

Most people. A strong starting card for anyone entering the Amex ecosystem.

Amex Rewards Credit Card

Free forever
Fee: No annual fee — everEarn rate: 1 MR per £1 everywhere

Welcome bonus

10,000 MR points

after £2,000 in 3 months

  • No annual fee at any point
  • Same MR currency as premium cards
  • 10,000-point welcome bonus (~£100 in Avios)
  • Points never expire while card is active
  • Good entry card before upgrading

Verdict

The free card earns MR points at the same rate as the Gold and Platinum — just without the double-point categories or travel perks. If you want to test whether Amex acceptance works for your lifestyle before committing to a fee card, start here.

Best for

New Amex customers wanting to trial MR with zero risk, or as a permanent no-fee card.

Amex Business Gold / Business Platinum

Self-employed
Fee: Gold: £195/year (free year 1) — Platinum: £650/yearEarn rate: Up to 2 MR per £1 on business categories

Welcome bonus

Up to 40,000 MR points

after Varies by card

  • Same MR currency — transfers to the same partners
  • Higher earn rates on categories like advertising and technology
  • Charge card — no preset spending limit
  • Expense management tools
  • Can be held alongside personal Amex cards

Verdict

If you're self-employed or run a limited company, business Amex cards let you earn MR points on legitimate business spending — at high rates. The points pool into the same MR balance as your personal cards.

Best for

Sole traders, freelancers, and small business owners with regular business expenses.

Key insight — read this before transferring

Never convert MR points to Avios reflexively.

Keep your MR points as MR until you have a specific redemption in mind. MR is more flexible and can be transferred to Avios at any time. Avios cannot be converted back into MR. The moment you transfer, you lose access to all other 13+ transfer partners. Patience here is worth real money.

Redemptions

What your MR points are worth

Value per MR point varies enormously depending on how you redeem. The difference between the best and worst option is over 5x.

British Airways Avios

Best

~1.5p–2p+ per MR point

1 MR = 1 Avios

The most popular MR transfer. Short-haul European off-peak returns can cost under 13,000 Avios each way — at 1.5p–2p per Avios, that's exceptional value for flights that would otherwise cost £150–£300. The London–Edinburgh and London–Dublin routes are under 10,000 Avios return off-peak.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

Best

~1.2p–1.8p per MR point

1 MR = 1 Virgin Point

Virgin points are best used on transatlantic Upper Class redemptions, or via partner airlines. The round-the-world redemption option has historically offered strong value. Transfers from MR are instantaneous.

Emirates Skywards

Best

~1p–2p+ on premium cabins

1 MR = 1 Skywards mile

Emirates first class and business class redemptions are among the most aspirational in travel. Availability can be limited, but when you find it, the value is exceptional — first class suites that retail at £5,000+ for under 150,000 miles return.

Air France KLM Flying Blue

Good

~1p–1.5p per MR point

1 MR = 1 Flying Blue mile

Flying Blue runs monthly Promo Rewards flash sales with discounted redemption rates on specific routes — sometimes 30–50% off. Worth monitoring if you fly Air France or KLM routes.

Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer

Good

~1.5p–2p+ on Suites/Business

1 MR = 1 KrisFlyer mile

Singapore Airlines Suites are considered the world's best first class product. KrisFlyer miles can unlock these at rates that represent extraordinary value versus cash price. Best for aspirational long-haul travel.

Hilton Honors

Average

~0.5p–1p per MR point

1 MR = 2 Hilton points

Hilton points are worth roughly 0.3–0.5p each, and you get 2 per MR transferred — so roughly 0.6–1p in MR terms. Less efficient than airline transfers but useful if you need hotel points and can target a high-value property redemption.

Gift cards

Poor

~0.7p per MR point

Varies by retailer

Gift cards for retailers like M&S, Amazon, or John Lewis are available but deliver only around 0.7p per MR point. Better than statement credit, but you're throwing away roughly half the potential value versus Avios transfers.

Statement credit

Avoid

~0.4p per MR point

N/A

Using MR points to pay off your Amex statement is the single worst redemption available. You're converting points worth 1.5p–2p each into 0.4p of statement credit — a loss of more than 75% of their potential value.

Shop with points (Amazon etc.)

Avoid

~0.4p per MR point

N/A

Amex lets you use points at checkout on Amazon and other retailers. Convenient, terrible value — equivalent to statement credit. Never use MR points for retail purchases.

Strategy

How to get the most from MR

01

Start with the Gold card welcome bonus

The 20,000-point welcome bonus on the Amex Gold (free in year 1) is worth roughly £200–£300 in Avios. Hit the £3,000 spend threshold and you've already earned significant value before paying a penny in fees.

02

Use your card for all regular spending

MR points are earned on almost all UK spending. Put your monthly direct debits, groceries, petrol, and bills on the card — pay it off in full each month. Never carry a balance.

03

Keep MR points flexible until you have a plan

Don't transfer to any partner until you know exactly what you want to book. Check BA Avios availability, Virgin, Flying Blue, and Emirates all at the same time before committing to a transfer.

04

Target short-haul Avios sweet spots

European off-peak returns under 13,000 Avios each way are consistently the best value. London to Nice, Barcelona, Lisbon, Rome — these routes offer 1.5p–2p+ per point fairly easily.

05

Avoid statement credit and retail spend

Never use MR points for statement credit (0.4p/point), Amazon checkout, or gift cards unless you are completely sure you'll never travel again. You're destroying value.

06

Consider the Platinum if you travel heavily

The £650 Platinum fee is a lot — but the £200 travel credit, Priority Pass lounge access, and worldwide travel insurance have real cash value. If you use them, the card can pay for itself before the points are even counted.

True as of April 2026 — subject to change. Card fees, welcome bonus amounts, earn rates, partner lists, and redemption values can change at any time.
