Tesco Clubcard
The most underrated points scheme in the UK. The partner doubling (and tripling) trick turns modest grocery savings into genuine value — and it's completely passive if you already shop at Tesco.

How Tesco Clubcard works
Clubcard points are earned in Tesco stores and converted into vouchers every quarter. Those vouchers can be spent in Tesco at face value — or converted into partner rewards at 2x or 3x their value.
Step 1
Earn points
1 Clubcard point per £1 spent in Tesco stores, online, and at Tesco petrol stations. Points also earned on Tesco Mobile bills.
Step 2
Receive vouchers
Every 150 points = £1.50 in Clubcard vouchers, issued quarterly. 150 points = £1.50 at face value (1p per point). But with partners, that £1.50 becomes £3 or £4.50.
Step 3
Convert to partners
In the Tesco app or online, swap your vouchers for partner rewards. A £2.50 voucher becomes £5 at Hotels.com (2x) or £7.50 at Zizzi (3x).
The golden rule
Never spend Clubcard vouchers directly in Tesco. At face value in Tesco, your vouchers are worth 1p per point. Convert to partners and they're worth 2p or 3p per point — you're instantly doubling or tripling your money for free. There is almost no situation where spending Clubcard vouchers in Tesco is better than using them at a 2x or 3x partner instead.

How I personally use my Clubcard points
My go-to: Hotels.com at 2x
I personally use my Clubcard points to book hotels via Hotels.com at the 2x redemption. It's simple, the Hotels.com platform is easy to use, and the 2x multiplier means I'm always getting double value. If I'm going somewhere where Hotels.com has good coverage, this is where my Clubcard balance goes.
For dining: Zizzi or Pizza Express at 3x
If you're looking for a meal out, Zizzi and Pizza Express both offer 3x — meaning a £2.50 Clubcard voucher becomes £7.50 toward your bill. This is some of the best redemption value available anywhere in UK loyalty programmes. A family of four could get a decent meal significantly subsidised.
The Tesco credit card — worth it?
The short answer: probably not as your main card.
The maths problem
The Tesco credit card earns 1 extra Clubcard point per £4 spent on general purchases (outside Tesco). At the best possible redemption rate (3x partner), that's 0.75p per £1 of general spending. Compare that to a free Amex Membership Rewards card earning 1 MR per £1 — worth 0.4p–2p+ depending on redemption. Or a basic cashback card returning 0.5%–1% automatically. For everyday spending, the Tesco credit card is simply not competitive with the alternatives.
What to do instead
Use your Clubcard in Tesco — absolutely. Collect points every time you shop. But use a better card (Amex MR, cashback, or Avios card) for the actual payment. That way you're earning Clubcard points on the shop AND earning a more valuable secondary reward on the spend. You can hold the Clubcard separately from any credit card.
Tesco Clubcard vs Nectar points
| Factor | Clubcard | Nectar |
|---|---|---|
| Earn rate (store) | 1pt per £1 at Tesco | 1pt per £1 at Sainsbury's |
| Base value | 1p per point | 0.5p per point |
| Best redemption | 3p per point (3x partners) | Avios conversion (1p–2p+) |
| Travel link | Hotels.com (2x) | Avios (1:1 transfer) |
| Best dining | Zizzi, Pizza Express (3x) | No restaurant partners |
| Credit card worth using? | No — use Clubcard separately | Nectar Amex is genuinely good |
Both schemes are worth using passively. Clubcard has higher base value and better in-person redemptions; Nectar wins for travellers who want Avios.
